You can count on Kanabec Hospital

for more than top-quality healthcare!

Kanabec Hospital is committed to the health and wellness of our community.  As such, we are dedicated to being a center of excellence in providing healthcare of the highest quality. We pride ourselves on providing experienced health professionals, compassionate care, personal attention and uncompromising standards to our patients.

We hold ourselves to very high standards, but more importantly we hope you, our patients, friends and neighbors, have come to trust and expect that we will provide exceptional care to you and your loved ones, and do so in the most compassionate manner.

However, in addition to providing the best in medical care, Kanabec Hospital professionals are dedicated to maintaining our position as a leader in supporting the health and safety of all our community.  As a not-for-profit we are not required to return

profits to shareholders like other organizations; we reinvest revenues to enhance our capacity to deliver high-quality healthcare and provide many uncompensated benefits to the communities we serve.

Community benefits encompass many services and activities that address community health needs through community education, disease prevention, health promotion, professional training, social services, and discounts and free medical care to those without health insurance or who are underinsured.  The following are some details on specific community benefit activities.

Uncompensated Care

Kanabec Hospital treats all patients equally, regardless of age, sex, race, religion, marital status, source of payment or ability to pay.  Sometimes payments from insurance companies, Medicaid, Medicare and other government programs do not meet our costs.  The hospital recognizes that some patients are uninsured, underinsured or otherwise unable to pay for essential medical services, so we provide care without charge, or at discounted rates.  Also, like any business, sometimes people do not pay their bills.  In fiscal year 2006, Kanabec Hospital provided almost $1 million in uncompensated care.

Professional Education & Training

We at Kanabec Hospital are community-focused and believe the recruitment, training and retention of outstanding medical professionals are central to our ability to provide the best medical care to our community residents.  With that in mind, the hospital provides clinical training, internships, residencies, job shadowing, continuing education and medical seminars to our healthcare workers and to those who are studying to become a healthcare professional.

By providing educational opportunities for local high school students, college students from the metro area and beyond, current healthcare employees, and affiliate staff and employees, Kanabec Hospital keeps abreast of the latest medical technology; assists students in becoming the highly educated and compassionate healthcare workers we expect; and encourages students and employees to establish their career here, thus reducing our recruitment costs.  Total cost for professional education and training is about $130,000 per year.

Community Health Education & Screenings

Kanabec Hospital provides free classes, educational opportunities, and health screenings to residents as well as no-charge support activities for individuals in the community living with a serious or chronic health condition.

Classes are offered for people of all ages and health interests or issues.  The 55 Alive class supports safety for older drivers, our Prenatal Education course provides safety and peace-of-mind to new parents-to-be, the Safe Sitter babysitting course teaches babysitting safety for both the teen babysitter and their charges, and our CPR and Life Support classes bring first aid and safety training to people of all kinds.  Other educational seminars are provided as the opportunity or need arises.  Most classes are free; if a fee is charged, it is only to cover the cost of purchased materials.  In addition, we provide educational tours to elementary school groups, provide speakers at area schools and participate in Mora High School’s School to Work program.

Health screenings have included blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, posture, and others.  Every time we provide a free screening at least one person is alerted to a previously unknown and potentially serious medical condition.

Support Groups offer patients and the community a way to cope with the issues

they face with the comfort of knowing that there are others there to help.  Kanabec Hospital’s groups are managed by internal staff and employees who organize, lecture and facilitate.  Support groups are available for people who have had bariatric surgery, are living with cancer, diabetes or lung disease, and those who are caregivers.

The hospital takes part in a variety of health fairs and community events to provide health education to the public. At these events we provide free brochures and information sheets on many health topics.  We also have health professionals available to answer your questions.

The cost to the hospital to provide these free health screenings, support groups and education is over $100,000 per year.

Community Service

It’s important for our community members to realize the level of community support and involvement the people at Kanabec Hospital demonstrate.  Each year our staff members, employees and volunteers give their time, skills, manpower and other resources to make a positive impact and build a strong, safe and healthy community.

A wide variety of charitable drives and fundraisers are organized by members of our hospital.  Employees donate to one or all of those charitable activities and are involved in other fundraisers throughout our community.  Employee-organized fundraisers have helped local families with food, school supplies, clothes, holiday gifts, and much more.

Although the hospital actively recruits employees who want to be positive members of the hospital and the community it serves, these philanthropic activities are undertaken on their own volition. No financial value has been determined for these charitable works, nor could a dollar amount be placed on the value of the hearts of the people at Kanabec Hospital.  As Chief Executive Officer, I am extremely proud to have them here helping our patients and contributing to our community.

Exceeding Your Expectations

As you can see, Kanabec Hospital and its staff truly strive to provide the best in health to the people of this area.  Clearly, this dedication to our community extends beyond the medical services we provide.
