Established
in 1945, the hospital's primary market is to those in Kanabec,
Pine, Aitkin, Isanti, and Mille Lacs counties. Kanabec
Hospital has undergone several expansions throughout the
years. The 2003 expansion was the largest and most
extensive. That expansion doubled the size of the
hospital campus.
The
2006-07 expansion added another 21,337 square feet of service
space. A new high-tech surgery suite located on the
second floor totals 18,000 square feet. It was in
full use at the beginning of February 2007. The new space
includes 4 spacious state-of-the-art operating rooms, 15
private pre/post-op rooms, 4 high-tech recovery rooms, 2
pediatric post-op rooms and 2 large procedure rooms.
In addition to providing the latest in surgical technology
and comfort to patients, the new surgery suite allows Kanabec
Hospital to continue to expand its surgical services.
Kanabec
Hospital's Rehabilitation Therapy department received a
complete remodel and upgrade with the addition of over 2,000
square feet. There are seven more treatment rooms,
for a total of 11. More room was also provided for
cardiac rehab, occupational therapy and physical therapy.
In addition, the waiting area is much larger and more comfortable,
and reception and registration provide increased patient
privacy.
Kanabec
Hospital's services include 24-hour physician-staffed emergency
department; paramedic- and EMT-staffed ambulance department;
maternity and prenatal care with private birthing suites;
general and specialist surgeries; intensive care; laboratory
and imaging services; inpatient medical care; physical,
occupational, speech and cardiac therapies; respiratory
therapy; chemotherapy and a cancer clinic; and social services.
Also located in the hospital is a hospice unit.
Other
healthcare services include air and ground ambulance transfers,
ultrasound, newborn hearing testing, pediatrics, sleep apnea
testing and treatment, Doppler studies, echocardiograms,
gastroenterology, colonoscopies, EGDs, CT scans, osteoporosis screening, mammography,
MRI/MRA, nuclear medicine, radiology, teleradiology, EEG
and EMG, lithotripsy, OB stress/non-stress testing, pharmacy,
podiatry, arrhythmia detection, and cardiac stress testing.
Kanabec
Hospital’s medical staff consists of Family Practice
physicians, Emergency physicians, and over 100 specialists,
therapists and consulting physicians. Family Practice
physicians include: Randall Bostrom, M.D., Peter Donner,
M.D., Mark Hruby, M.D., Terry Johnson, M.D., Brian Niskanen,
M.D., Eric Poulin, M.D., Brin Schuler, M.D., and Jack Schwinghamer,
M.D.
Surgeries
include general, ENT (ear, nose & throat), ophthalmology
(cataracts), OB/GYN (female reproductive), urology (bladder
and related) and orthopedic (bones and joints). Orthopedic
Surgeon Scott Lagaard, M.D., considered an expert in his
field, performs full hip and knee replacements. Central Minnesota Surgeons also provide services at the Kanabec Hospital facilities.
Maternity
and birthing care includes prenatal care, prepartum testing,
family-centered birthing suites, breast feeding and infant
care education, newborn screenings and pediatric care.
In addition, Kanabec Hospital has six certified lactation
counselors to provide education and assistance for breastfeeding.
Emergency
Medical Services is ready 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,
to respond to any medical emergency. Recent improvements
include a new ambulance and 24/7 paramedic coverage.
Kanabec Hospital has three full-time Emergency Medicine
physicians, over 20 ambulance personnel (paramedics and
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs)), plus specially-trained
nurses and support personnel. The ambulance service
is linked with Twin Cities emergency helicopter services
to provide the most advanced emergency medical care possible.
Community
service activity includes educational classes, support groups
and health-related seminars designed specifically for area
residents, free health screenings, employee drives, and
participation in community groups and events. Education
includes prenatal classes, diabetic instruction, coronary
instruction, cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), dietary
consultation, telemedicine programs, and hospital tours.
Support groups are available at no charge: Cancer Support
Group, Caregiver’s Support Group, Diabetes Education
and Support Group and Lung Disease Support Group (the Blow-Hards).
Kanabec
Hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on
Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and is licensed
as a critical access hospital. The hospital is a self-sustaining
non-profit organization; no county tax dollars are used
to maintain it.
The
hospital is located at the junction of Highways 65 and 23
in Mora.
